Why Veg?

How to start

The Koko diet

Vegetarian basics

Semi vegetarian - Eats all types of food, but limits the amount of meat and animal by=products consumed.

Ovo-lacto vegetarian - Does not eat meat, but does eat dairy and eggs.

Vegan - Does not eat meat or any animal by-product or ingredient (milk, eggs, cheese, honey, beeswax, gelatin, etc.) Avoids products such as household items, cosmetics, cleaners, etc. which contain animal products or those which were tested on animals, including the finished product as well ingredients. Strict vegetarian is a term given to vegans (often by strict vegans) who maintain a diet free of animal ingredients, but may not avoid other products or clothing containing animal ingredients.

Vegan diet

As stated above, the vegan diet excludes meat, dairy, and any animal-derived ingredient. Some ingredients may not be obviously animal-related, but read labels very carefully when deciding what goes into your grocery basket. If you don't know what it is, don't buy it. Some ingredients may have alternate names, so be sure to know those, too.

Vegan areas

Veganism is often considered a lifestyle choice when people want to take more responsibility in promoting animal rights and combatting animal abuse and neglect, especially in corporations, by boycotting products, clothing, etc. which test on animals, contain animal ingredients, or otherwise negatively affect animals. Some refer to the degree of these abstentions as "level" of vegan. This creates a lot of competition among vegans as to who can be the "purest". This creates tension and discouragement instead of creating unity and strength among vegans, and for this reason I prefer to call them "vegan areas". You may be vegan in one area (cosmetics), but not in another (clothing). Whichever you choose, it is your right. The amount of good you do by choosing to be vegan - to any degree - is a big step to help save animals and that is the ultimate goal. Don't lose sight of the big picture.
